Ancient history and hidden secrets are revealed during your journey bringing Edinburgh to life as you stroll along the narrow streets of the Old Town, then the more elegant Georgian New Town, sensing how Edinburgh has traveled into a more modern, enlightened, and commercial era. Then, visit the iconic Edinburgh’s Castle, which dominates the city’s skyline atop a dormant volcano. This most famous of Scottish castles has a complex building history with the oldest part dating from the 12th century. “Wherever I wander, wherever I rove, the hills of the Highlands forever I love.” -Robert Burns, Scottish Poet, 1759-1796
We think Scotland’s son, Robert (Rabbie) Burns knew what he was talking about. The Scottish Highlands are renowned for their breathtaking scenery, and today, you’ll travel to the famous Isle of Skye. Break-up the drive today by visiting the historic sight of the slaughter of the MacDonald clan at Glencoe. At nearby Fort William, you’ll be at the foot of the U.K.’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis. Drive by the iconic site of Glenfinnan Viaduct where you can see the “Harry Potter” steam train crossing the famous bridge. Take a ferry across the sea to reach your Isle destination where you’ll have beautiful accommodations in the best rated 4-star hotel on Skye’s main city of Portree.

From your Portree hotel, head out today to discover Skye, the 2nd largest of Scotland’s isles. On a 50-mile-long patchwork of velvet moors, jagged mountains, sparkling lochs, and towering sea cliffs, you’ll understand why the scenery is the main attraction. See the sparkling Fairy Pools, historic Dunvegan Castle, have a dram of smoky Talisker (or visit the distillery). The cliff waterfalls at Kilt Rock are incredible, as are the protruding rock formations at Quiraing and the Old Man of Storr. Fantastic walks await! Overnight again in Portree.

Continue to the almost 23-mile-long Loch Ness. Known for reputed “sea-monster,” Nessie, the Loch has much more to offer. In addition to being Scotland’s second deepest loch, the scenery as you sail down the loch is almost eerie. Enjoy a boat ride this afternoon and you’ll have the chance to stop at Urquhart Castle (another stunning castle ruin) before returning to your embarkation pier and continuing onwards to Inverness, known as the capital of the Highlands, where you’ll check into a beautiful 5-star Riverside property.
